Company History

Here in NSW & ACT, Laverty Pathology and its predecessor practices can trace their foundation back to 1928, with the establishment of Dr Eva Shipton’s medical laboratory in Macquarie Street in Sydney.

Dr Shipton was one of Australia’s first female specialist pathologists, and was appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1974 for services to medicine.

Her practice grew steadily through the addition of a number of well-known pathology practices, including the practices of Doctors Maynard, Orban, Lindsell, Hale, Cottom, Woods, Moses and Patwardhan. In 2008, SDS merged with Symbion  Laverty Pathology to become one of Australia’s largest pathology practices, and is today known as “Laverty Pathology”.

QML Pathology’s story is one of vision, hard work, persistence and innovation. In the 1920s, founders of QML Pathology, Dr Noel Gutteridge and Dr James Duhig independently established pathology practices in Brisbane. In doing so, they forged strong reputations as pioneers of private pathology, providing Brisbane and parts of regional Queensland with the first service of this kind.

In 1999, QML was renamed QML Pathology and since then has continued to uphold the values instilled by its founders all those years ago.

These private practices were passed on to their sons, Bruce Gutteridge and Robert and James Duhig. In 1974, the practices of Bruce Gutteridge and Robert Duhig amalgamated under the name of Queensland Medical Laboratory (QML). The growth of QML continued throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales, becoming a major private pathology provider in the region. Later joined by other pathologists in partnership, the company continued to innovate by integrating the most sophisticated technology available at the time.

In 2022 QML Pathology were inducted into the QLD Business Leaders Hall of Fame

This prestigious award honours our past and present teams for their outstanding leadership, achievements and contribution to healthcare in Queensland. QML Pathology has long been recognised as a national leader in pathology, often the first to market with the latest technologies and diagnostic systems.Click here for QML Pathology’s story and how it evolved to become the large, hugely successful business it is today.
